Although we’re still a small company ReignDesign now has four global offices: in Shanghai, Barcelona, Bangkok and Santiago. In this blog series we’re going to introduce our home cities to you through the voices of our team. We’ve asked one ReignDesign team member in each city to recommend a cool place to visit, to eat, to drink and to sleep!
First up, our founder Matt Mayer in Bangkok, Thailand…
Visit here – Jim Thompson House
When visiting friends ask me what not to miss while in Bangkok, I tell them to visit the Jim Thompson house. Jim Thompson was an American who during the 1950s and 1960s helped revitalise the Thai silk industry. He disappeared in mysterious circumstances in Malaysia. His house in Bangkok is now a tourist attraction, created by combining together six old Thai houses from around the country. The tours are really interesting and the silk items in the gift shop are a high-quality souvenir.
Eat here – Supanniga Eating Room
Despite the weird name, this is one of the best Thai restaurants in Bangkok. Set in the trendy Thong Lor area (possibly less trendy since I moved into the neighbourhood), Supanniga Eating Room serves home-style Thai food in a beautiful setting on Sukhumvit Soi 55. It’s also pretty affordable for upmarket Thai cuisine, with many dishes below 200 baht.
Drink here – J. Boroski
After you’ve eaten your fill at Supanniga, head down Sukhumvit Soi 55 the street to J. Boroski, a hidden bar tucked down a side-street. There’s no menu here, instead the bartenders will ask what kind of drink you like and serve you a custom-made cocktail. It sounds frightfully pretentious, but it’s actually surprisingly down-to-earth and the bartenders make a mean drink.
Sleep here – Westin Grande Sukhumvit
Bangkok has a massive range of accommodation, from cheap backpacker hostels on Khao San Road to surprisingly affordable 5-star hotels. At under $100/night pre-paid, the Westin Grande Sukhumvit is a steal. The location is steps away from the Skytrain station, the staff are incredibly friendly and I loved the Heavenly beds so much I ended up buying one when moving into my new apartment!
